Up until December 2009, he held the James H. Shumaker honorary professor position in the Faculty of Journalism of the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill (USA), where he continues teaching in the Communications Master Degree program. He is also a consultant at the Open University of Catalonia and gives conferences for the Journalism Master's Degree, in São Paulo, Brazil, as well as the director of infographics in the weekly magazine Época, owned by Globo, the largest media group in Latin America.

From 2000 to 2005 he headed the online infographics department of the newspaper El Mundo, in Spain. During these years, his department won numerous international awards and was considered a pioneer in the development of interactive visualization of information. His previous book, Infographics 2.0: interactive visualization of information in the press (Alamut, 2008) was the first to present an in-depth description of the workings of a modern-day journalistic infographics department.
