Which language do developers prefer? Which tools do they use? A study conducted by the platform specialized in the GitLab development ecosystem highlights that developers do not lean toward just one tool and that, just as it happens in other sectors, collaborative is a favorite.
As stressed by Sid Sijbrandij, CEO and co-founder of GitLab, “programmers are currently looking for the most natural evolution of software development that promotes collaboration and information exchange during a project’s life cycle.”
The study shows that 98% of developers use open source tools to work. Specifically, around 56% say that more than half of their development tools are open source; and 18% only use open source tools.
As for the available options during a project, the study indicates that more than half of programmers (55%) choose the tools they already work with.
When asked about the most important tools and techniques, 92% state that distributed systems for version control (Git) are “very or extremely important” for their day-to-day work, followed by continuous integration (77%), agile development (59%) and continuous delivery (55%).
Security is a key factor for experts. 86% of respondents believe security is important when you develop code. However, 8 in every 10 have released code before it was ready.
In this context, the need to meet deadlines (59%), pressure from senior management (38%) and team turnover (19%) are the three main reasons for releasing code before time.
Interestingly, development experts like digital communication: 66% prefer to be contacted over email or instant messaging rather than in person.
